United Airlines pilots gate‑side food delivery at Newark Airport

Newark, N.J. – United Airlines has begun a pilot program that could change the way travelers grab a bite before a flight. Starting this week, passengers departing from or connecting through nine gates (C125‑C138) in Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport can order food, beverages and essential travel items in advance using the United mobile app.

How the service works

Eligible travelers receive a push notification from the United app or an email before departure. The notification prompts them to browse a curated menu of airport vendors, including popular spots such as Nonna’s Kitchen and Victory Grill. After selecting items, the order is sent to United’s partner, OTG, which prepares the meals and places them on a designated pickup shelf at the passenger’s gate.

When the traveler arrives at the gate, the items are ready for immediate collection, eliminating the need to rush through the terminal or wait in long lines at concession stands. United says the service also includes travel‑gear essentials such as headphones, blankets and eye masks.

Plans for expansion

While the initial rollout is limited to Newark, United has announced plans to extend the pilot to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport later this year. The airline will gather customer feedback from both locations to assess demand and refine the ordering process.

If the program proves successful, United intends to integrate the ordering feature directly into its seat‑back in‑flight entertainment screens, allowing passengers to place orders from the aircraft and have items delivered to their seats on future flights.

Why this matters for travelers

For families and business travelers alike, the ability to secure a meal before boarding can reduce stress and improve the overall travel experience. The service aligns with United’s broader effort to modernize the passenger journey and leverage technology to provide convenience.

Local businesses at Newark Airport stand to benefit from increased exposure as travelers discover new dining options through the app. The partnership with OTG also showcases how airlines can collaborate with airport vendors to create mutually beneficial solutions.

What passengers are saying

Early participants have praised the convenience, noting that the pre‑order system saved them time and allowed them to enjoy a hot meal rather than a typical snack. United will continue to monitor satisfaction scores and adjust the menu offerings based on regional preferences.

United’s gate‑side food delivery pilot reflects a growing trend among airlines to enhance the ground experience, a move that could set a new standard for airport services across the United States.
