Uniontown and Laurel Highlands clash in final Big Six showdown

Friday night brings a pivotal rivalry game for Fayette County high school football fans as Uniontown and Laurel Highlands (LH) face off at Mustang Field. Both teams sit winless in conference play (0‑4) and are desperate for a breakthrough victory before the season ends.

Coaches eye first win of the year

Laurel Highlands, now 0‑9 overall, is led by first‑year head coach Ian Edenfield, who hopes to secure his program’s inaugural win. Uniontown’s veteran coach Tim Bukowski is equally eager to snap a four‑game losing streak and give his players a morale‑boosting finish.

“I think it’s great for the rivalry to play the last week of the season,” Bukowski said. “It has helped keep the players focused on finishing out the season and looking forward to this game.”

The Red Raiders last defeated LH in the series back in 2013, a 42‑35 victory. “We haven’t beaten them in a long time so we want to try and break that streak,” Bukowski added. “We know that they will be ready to go and so will we. It should be a great night for football in Fayette County.”

Conference championship picture

While the Uniontown‑LH game decides who claims the first conference win, the Class 3A Interstate title will be decided when Belle Vernon (5‑0, 8‑1) travels to Warrior Stadium to meet perennial power Elizabeth Forward (5‑0, 8‑1). In the Tri‑County South, defending champion California (6‑0, 7‑2) heads to Beth‑Center (6‑0, 9‑0), the area’s only unbeaten team.

Playoff implications in the Tri‑County South

Another key matchup sees Avella (4‑2, 5‑4) host Frazier (4‑2, 5‑4) for a third‑place spot. Eagles coach Ryan Cecchini emphasized the stakes: “Whoever wins that is in the playoffs. That’s a guaranteed spot, so we’ve got a lot to play for.” After a narrow 24‑28 loss to California, Cecchini remains optimistic: “Hopefully we can take this performance we had and roll it into next week.”

The Commodores kept their playoff hopes alive with a late‑fourth‑quarter victory at Mapletown, while Albert Gallatin (2‑2, 4‑5) remains in contention as it travels to Chartiers Valley (3‑1, 5‑4).

Other local matchups

Rivalry games continue across the county: Mount Pleasant (2‑3, 4‑5) meets host Southmoreland (1‑4, 2‑7) at Russ Grimm Field, a win that could keep the Vikings in Wild Card contention. In Class 2A Allegheny Conference, Brownsville (0‑5, 0‑9) visits Charleroi (0‑5, 3‑6). Greene County rivals Mapletown (0‑6, 0‑9) and Carmichaels (2‑4, 3‑6) clash at Coaches Field, while West Greene (1‑5, 2‑7) and Jefferson‑Morgan (1‑5, 1‑8) meet at Parker Field.

Playoff‑bound Waynesburg Central (7‑2) travels to Valley (2‑7) in a non‑conference contest, rounding out a night packed with high‑stakes football for the region.
