A recent report by the American Accountability Foundation (AAF) has accused the leadership of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division (BMWED-IBT) of using union resources to support Democratic priorities, thus undermining many of its own MAGA members. The report claims that the union’s leadership has funneled money to support left-leaning causes such as Black Lives Matter, abortion, and universal health care, while opposing President Trump’s agenda.

Allegations of Wasteful Spending

The report also alleges that the union has spent millions on questionable expenses, including $7.25 million on hotels and conferences, $5.44 million on legal fees, and $2.33 million at casinos and resorts. The union’s leaders have been accused of displaying a ‘stunning betrayal’ of their members and abandoning the will of their large MAGA member base.

The BMWED-IBT has pushed back against the report, stating that the union has operated at a budget surplus since 2022 and that its work on Capitol Hill is focused on securing the best policy and protections for its members. The union has also collaborated with Republicans on key rail safety legislation, including the Secure Tracks Act.
