Understanding Why Women Tend to Over-Apologize

In Chamblee, Georgia, Gabriela Cryan, a 23-year-old sales professional, found herself apologizing for a coffee order mistake that wasn’t her fault. This scenario is all too familiar for many women who feel compelled to say ‘sorry’ even when not at fault.

Societal Expectations and Psychological Insights

Psychologist Stephen Hinshaw from the University of California, Berkeley, identifies an ‘impossible set of expectations’ placed on women, which he terms the ‘triple bind.’ This includes being compassionate, competitive, and effortlessly desirable. These conflicting expectations can lead to internalized feelings of failure, manifesting in frequent apologies.

Hinshaw’s research, alongside the rise of social media, highlights increasing mental health challenges among young women, such as depression and anxiety, exacerbated by these societal pressures.

Gender Differences in Apology Behavior

Karina Schumann, a social psychology expert at the University of Pittsburgh, explains that men and women have different thresholds for what they consider offensive, influencing their likelihood to apologize. Women often perceive more situations as requiring an apology compared to men.

Despite the stereotype that men rarely apologize, Schumann’s study found that when men do perceive an offense, they are just as likely to apologize as women. However, women report more offenses and apologies overall.

Implications in the Workplace

Frequent apologizing can impact perceptions in the workplace, where women are often seen as less assertive. This perception can affect career advancement, as seen in the stagnant representation of women in C-suite roles.

While apologies can be acts of humility and empathy, overuse can diminish their value. Experts like Schumann and Hinshaw suggest a mindful approach to apologies, encouraging humility and thoughtful reflection on whether an apology is warranted.
