The smell hits first — grain and warm malt drifting out through the roll-up garage doors onto Rosselle Street, where Riverside and Avondale press against each other and the traffic thins out after dark. Undercurrent Brewing opened in 2021 in a converted industrial bay, and it has since become the kind of place that regulars treat like a neighborhood living room, which is to say they show up without occasion, stay longer than planned, and bring their dogs.
The taproom is spare by design. Exposed ductwork, concrete floors, a long wooden bar, a few high-tops scattered toward the open garage wall. There’s a patio out back shaded by an old oak that drops its leaves into the beer garden through fall and winter. The interior lighting is warm enough to make conversation feel easy without being dim enough to feel like something is being hidden. It’s the kind of room that works on a Tuesday as well as a Saturday.
The beer is the serious part. Head brewer Chris Bove cycles through a rotating tap list that leans toward lagers, Kölsch-style ales, and well-made IPAs without drifting into novelty-flavor territory. The Crosstown Kölsch has been a consistent anchor — clean, slightly floral, a reliable choice if the seasonal board is unfamiliar. The Riverside Lager drinks crisp and uncluttered, the sort of thing that gets ordered in rounds without a lot of deliberation. On any given visit, there are eight to ten options on draft, usually including a darker option and something sessionable for the person who wants to pace themselves through a long Friday.
Pours run $5 to $8 depending on the style and ABV, with flights available for four samples at a reasonable flat rate. Cans are sold to go from the cooler near the front, and they move steadily. There’s no kitchen, but the brewery welcomes outside food and maintains a short list of rotating food trucks parked outside on weekend evenings — mostly local operators, occasionally a wood-fired pizza outfit that parks close enough to smell from the bar.
What makes the place work isn’t the beer alone, though the beer earns it. It’s the location and the scale. Riverside’s older craft spots have aged into institutions — busy, sometimes loud, occasionally hard to find a seat at on a Friday. Undercurrent runs a smaller room at a smaller pitch. The staff know the regulars and treat newcomers like they could become regulars. There’s no trivia night branding plastered on the windows, no merchandise wall dominating the entrance. Just the bar, the taps, and whoever showed up that evening.
The surrounding neighborhood is walkable from several residential pockets, which matters in a city where most people drive everywhere by default. On warm weeknights, the patio fills with people who walked over from nearby streets, which gives the place a density and a sociability that feels more like a city than most of Jacksonville manages.
It’s worth knowing that parking can tighten up on weekend nights — street spots on Rosselle and the adjacent blocks fill quickly after seven. Getting there before the dinner hour saves the circling. The taproom is open Wednesday through Sunday, with later hours on Friday and Saturday. First-timers should ask the bar staff what came in recently; Bove brews in small batches and the seasonal slate turns over often enough that the answer is usually worth hearing.
