Gus Rickette Sr., co-founder of Uncle Remus Saucy Fried Chicken, celebrated his 100th birthday with a motorcade, food giveaway, and the launch of the Uncle Remus Foundation in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood.
Local Celebration
A crowd of dozens gathered to honor Rickette’s legacy and business footprint on the West Side. The celebration included a food giveaway of 700 fried chicken meals from the Uncle Remus food truck.
Rickette, who turned 100, rode in a large motorcade through the neighborhood before reaching a stage built in the parking lot next to the original Uncle Remus location at 5611 W. Madison St.
Legacy and Foundation
The Uncle Remus Foundation, a nonprofit, will promote entrepreneurship, hunger relief, and community development on the West Side. The foundation will carry on charitable work the family has already done, including supporting organizations like Debra’s Place and The Safer Foundation.
Rickette’s family announced the launch of the foundation, which will ensure the spirit of grace, grit, and generosity that built the Uncle Remus brand continues to uplift the community.
