UNC defensive coordinator Steve Belichick resigns after conduct probe concludes

University of North Carolina officials confirmed Thursday that defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, son of head coach Bill Belichick, will resign effective late October, following the conclusion of a probe into the football program’s conduct.

Probe findings and resignation timeline

The university’s statement said the investigation, launched in late July, determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for UNC’s values and standards of conduct. While the school declined to disclose specifics, it emphasized that the actions were isolated and did not represent a systemic failure.

Steve Belichick’s resignation will take effect after he completes a medical leave that began early in preseason camp. The university indicated that all necessary corrective actions are now underway and that the matter is considered resolved.

Related personnel changes

Earlier this month, the university also announced the resignation of general manager Michael Lombardi, a former NFL executive hired by Bill Belichick during his transition from the New England Patriots to college football. Lombardi stepped down on Sept. 3 after being placed on paid administrative leave.

During Bill Belichick’s first news conference after Lombardi’s departure, the head coach fielded questions that largely avoided football specifics. He affirmed his belief that the program “totally” upholds an atmosphere of rule‑following, stating, “Obviously everybody’s responsible, including me, for doing things properly. And we intend to do that.”

University response and support

Dean Stoyer, UNC’s vice chancellor for communications, reiterated the school’s continued support for Bill Belichick and the football program. The university declined to comment further on individuals involved in the probe, citing standard personnel policies.

Attorney Tom Mars, representing Michael Lombardi, told The Athletic that the investigation also examined potential “inappropriate” relationships that did not involve his client. The Associated Press later attempted to follow up with Mars, but he did not return the inquiry.

Context for the campus community

UNC’s football program, a major draw for alumni and local supporters, has faced heightened scrutiny amid these leadership changes. The university’s swift action to address the findings reflects a commitment to uphold the institution’s values and maintain confidence among students, parents, and fans.

While the specific conduct that prompted the investigation remains undisclosed, university officials emphasized that the issue was limited in scope and that the program is moving forward with corrective measures.

What’s next for UNC football?

With Steve Belichick’s departure set for late October, the coaching staff will need to fill the defensive coordinator role before the season’s critical phases. The university has not announced a replacement, but the administration indicated that the transition will be managed to minimize disruption to the team’s preparation.

Fans and stakeholders can expect further updates from the athletic department as the program works to restore stability and continue competing at a high level.
