New Zealand ultrarunner Sophie Woods has broken the record for the Via Alpina, a challenging endurance run that spans across 8 European countries. Woods completed the 1,240-mile journey in 29 days, beating the previous record by 6 days.
The Journey
Woods began her journey in Trieste, Italy, on July 4 and ended in Monaco on August 2. Along the way, she faced various terrains, including steep rock ascents and night runs. Despite the challenges, Woods persevered, fueled by her determination to break the record.
In an interview, Woods recalled the difficulties she faced, including swollen and sore muscles after the first week. To overcome these challenges, Woods reduced her sleep to fewer than 2.5 hours per night towards the end of the route.
Woods’ husband and dog provided emotional support and food supplies throughout her journey. Despite the physical and mental exhaustion, Woods felt a sense of delight and accomplishment upon completing the challenge.
