BAE Systems, the UK’s biggest defence company, has unveiled a new unmanned fighter jet, Brontanax, at the Farnborough Airshow. The Brontanax is about the size of a Hawk trainer and is expected to start flight testing next year.
Competition Heats Up
The global defence industry is witnessing a surge in demand for uncrewed fighter jets, with several companies, including Airbus, Boeing, Anduril, and General Atomics, competing for business. BAE Systems has invested heavily in its Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) programme, which is designed to fly alongside piloted aircraft and is expected to cost roughly a third as much as a traditional fighter jet.
According to BAE Systems’ CEO, Charles Woodburn, the company has ‘put our money where our mouth is’ and is hoping to secure a UK order, with other countries in Europe and the Middle East also showing interest. The Brontanax is expected to enter service by 2030 and will offer more stealth than its rivals, with 70-80% of the capabilities of a fighter jet at under 25% of the cost.
