Volunteer rescuers with the Ukrainian Red Cross are playing a crucial role in helping those affected by Russian strikes in Kyiv. Max, a 43-year-old graphic designer, is one of around 700 volunteer rescuers who have been trained to respond to emergencies.
Responding to Emergencies
Max and other members of Taras Didenko’s team of volunteer rescuers were quick to respond to the overnight attack that killed at least 21 and wounded around 90 people. They scoured the darkened, dust-strewn corridors for survivors, even before the air-raid alert was lifted.
The Ukrainian Red Cross has two-dozen teams stationed across the country, comprising a wide variety of professions, from IT workers to kindergarten teachers. These teams are not only responding to air strikes but also attending to car crashes and supporting music festivals.
On Thursday, the teams treated 35 people across Kyiv, with the attack causing the widest destruction in the capital this year and being the deadliest since at least May. Another volunteer, Anet, a 21-year-old project manager, said each strike-damage site poses a unique challenge, with the serious damage to a residential building requiring a lot of work and being difficult.
