Ukraine’s Drone Strikes Reach St. Petersburg Amid Tensions with Russia

In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, on Saturday morning. This attack underscores Ukraine’s growing capability to conduct operations deep within Russian territory.

The attack occurred shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed an offer from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for direct negotiations. St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov reported that three individuals sustained minor injuries, and residents were advised to remain indoors due to potential disruptions in mobile internet services. Meanwhile, regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko described the incident as an ‘unprecedented attack,’ with 141 drones reportedly shot down over the Leningrad region.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its air defenses intercepted 376 Ukrainian drones. President Zelenskyy confirmed on social media that Ukrainian drones targeted military arsenals and a naval base in the St. Petersburg region, as well as an oil depot in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region.

Impact on Russian Daily Life

The drone strike on St. Petersburg, which also set fire to an oil terminal and struck a nearby naval base, is seen as a blow to President Putin’s efforts to portray the conflict as a distant issue that does not affect everyday Russian life. The timing of the attack, just before the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, further highlighted the conflict’s reach into Russian territory.

During the forum, President Putin announced plans to bolster Russia’s air defenses in response to the increasing frequency of Ukrainian drone attacks. He rejected Zelenskyy’s proposal for a face-to-face meeting, stating that he saw ‘no point’ in such discussions. Zelenskyy’s proposal, delivered in a public letter, criticized Putin’s long tenure in power and included some pointed remarks about his age.

Escalating Tensions

Following Putin’s rejection of talks, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned that the situation would ‘only get worse for Russia,’ predicting more humiliating failures and asserting that no location in Russia is safe from Ukrainian long-range attacks. The conflict has seen both sides resorting to long-range strikes as the front lines remain largely unchanged.

In Ukraine, Russian forces conducted drone and artillery strikes in the Dnipropetrovsk region, resulting in one death and three injuries, according to regional head Oleksandr Hanzha. In Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone strike caused a fire at a parking lot, leading to seven individuals seeking medical attention, as reported by regional head Ivan Fedorov. Ukrainian air defenses claimed to have shot down 249 of the 272 strike drones launched by Russia overnight.
