Ukraine races to field new interceptors as Russian jet‑drones intensify attacks

Kyiv’s officials are sounding the alarm as Russia escalates its use of fast, jet‑powered Shahed drones – dubbed Geran‑4 and Geran‑5 – that are three times faster than earlier models. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that nearly 1,500 drones of all types were launched at Ukraine in the past four days, with more than half being the newer jet‑powered variants.

The surge has forced Ukraine to lean heavily on its limited fighter fleet, a costly and unsustainable solution. In response, the Defense Ministry announced a nationwide race to field indigenous interceptor drones capable of neutralizing the threat. Four domestic companies have entered the competition, and field trials are already underway, according to Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara.

New interceptor projects gain momentum

One prototype, called the Sting, has already claimed two jet‑powered drones in recent days. Another firm, F‑Drones, unveiled an upgraded system named LITAVR+, which it says can reach speeds over 400 km/h. Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, now traveling to the United States, is seeking partnerships with American defense firms to accelerate development of these systems and related technologies such as low‑cost AI‑guided missiles and battlefield robotics.

“Offensive capabilities always stay one step ahead of defensive ones,” warned Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of the President’s Office. “We will certainly have to adapt. This will take time.” Yet officials stress the urgency: the jet‑drones are being launched “practically straight from the factory,” according to an adviser to the president.

Impact on civilians and schools

The relentless drone barrage is not limited to military targets. Russian strikes have hit warehouses, gas stations, postal facilities and factories, and are now aimed at food stores and energy infrastructure. Kyiv’s city office warned that the increased frequency of alerts could disrupt the start of the new school year, urging parents to discuss shelter plans with their children.

“In the current circumstances, preparing for an alert is as essential as packing a school bag,” the office said, highlighting the growing overlap between national security and everyday family life.

Russia’s expanding missile arsenal

Alongside the drones, Russia has fielded a cheap cruise missile called the Banderol, capable of traveling up to 405 mph with a 150‑kilogram warhead. The missile’s range allows it to strike deep into southern Ukraine from helicopters over Crimea, threatening the vital Black Sea grain corridor. Recent attacks on the port of Odessa have slowed grain exports, raising insurance costs for shipments.

Ukrainian officials estimate that only about one‑third of the country’s potential grain export volume has been shipped since August began, underscoring the broader economic toll of the aerial campaign.

Looking ahead

While Ukraine continues to expand its own strike‑drone capabilities, the race to develop effective interceptors remains a critical front in the conflict. Success will depend on rapid production, foreign cooperation, and the ability to adapt to ever‑evolving Russian tactics.
