Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk met on Wednesday to discuss defense cooperation and historical issues. The meeting took place in the southeastern city of Lublin, Poland, as Zelenskiy was returning from talks in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Defense Cooperation
Zelenskiy stated that the two leaders discussed the outcome of his U.S. visit and the protection from cruel Russian strikes, particularly anti-ballistic weapons. Tusk wrote on social media that the talks centered on the security of Poland, Ukraine, and all of Europe.
Historical Issues
The meeting also addressed historical issues, including the interpretation of World War Two events that have caused tension between Warsaw and Kyiv. The dispute began when Zelenskiy named an army unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, a nationalist military group admired by many in Ukraine but reviled in Poland for its role in wartime massacres of Poles.
In June, Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki stripped Zelenskiy of Poland’s top honor over the dispute. Zelenskiy has since pledged to expand investigations into those killings. The two leaders also discussed security challenges and the well-being of Ukrainian refugees in Poland, who have faced hate crimes and xenophobic attacks in recent months.
