The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) announced on Wednesday that Uganda’s health authorities have confirmed an isolated case of Marburg virus disease, a highly infectious hemorrhagic fever.
The case was detected in Kyegegwa district in western Uganda, in a one-and-a-half-year-old child who had died. According to the Africa CDC, no contacts of the Marburg case have developed symptoms, and there is currently no active case in the East African country.
Africa CDC is engaging with the Government of Uganda through official public health channels to verify reports concerning Marburg virus disease. The organization stands ready to support verification, risk assessment, and response readiness as needed.
Two World Health Organization officials also confirmed that Uganda had detected a Marburg case. Uganda’s last Marburg outbreak was in 2017.
