Uganda Closes Border with Congo Amid Ebola Surge

In a decisive move to protect its citizens, Uganda has closed its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo due to a surge in Ebola cases. The decision, announced by a local Ebola task force led by Vice President Jesca Alupo, comes after several Ugandan health workers were exposed to the virus by Congolese patients who crossed the border before the outbreak was officially declared on May 15.

Rising Concerns in Uganda

Uganda has reported seven cases of Ebola, including the first case involving a 59-year-old man who succumbed to the disease in Kampala, the capital, on May 14. While the number of Ebola cases in Uganda is not currently spiking, there is growing concern about the potential for further spread due to the exposure of local health workers. Dr. Diana Atwine, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health, noted that these health workers have families, which increases the risk of transmission.

Ebola Situation in Congo

The situation in eastern Congo is dire, with nearly 1,000 suspected cases and at least 220 suspected deaths. The World Health Organization has upgraded the infection risk in Congo from high to very high, highlighting the severity of the outbreak. The remote geography and challenging surveillance infrastructure in the region contribute to the difficulty in accurately assessing and containing the outbreak.

Global Implications

While the threat to the United States and other countries remains low due to limited air connectivity with Congo, the situation is being closely monitored. The U.S. has robust screening and hospital containment measures in place, a legacy of preparations made during previous Ebola outbreaks. An American doctor, Peter Stafford, is among those affected in Congo, currently in critical condition but showing signs of improvement.
