UGA student survives 8‑story fall after metal bench breaks her descent

On Saturday evening at about 7:37 p.m., 21‑year‑old Kristen Sargent, a University of Georgia student, fell from an eighth‑floor window at the Rambler Athens apartment complex on West Broad Street in Athens, Georgia. According to a police report obtained by Fox News Digital, Sargent was dancing on a couch or air mattress near an open window when she apparently fell through the screen.

Bench likely slowed the impact

Witnesses and investigators say Sargent landed near a courtyard pool on the building’s second floor. Police found evidence that she struck a metal bench during the descent; an officer noted blood on the bench’s cushion and that one of its armrests had broken off. Lt. Katie Jenkins, spokesperson for the Athens‑Clarke County Police Department, said the bench likely helped break Sargent’s fall, preventing a more serious injury.

Emergency response and investigation

Emergency 911 audio captured a frantic caller reporting, “We’re on the eighth floor. My friend just fell out of the window… She’s on the ground. She fell out of the window.” Dispatchers asked whether Sargent was moving; the caller responded, “No, she’s not,” and later added that she could see Sargent below but could not determine if her eyes were open. Responders transported Sargent to a hospital, where police later interviewed her and witnesses while forensic personnel processed the scene.

The responding officer wrote that information gathered at the time suggested the fall was an accident. Lt. Jenkins confirmed that the incident is not being investigated as a criminal matter and that police understand Sargent is alert and conscious.

Apartment complex and university response

The police report identifies Sargent as a resident of the apartment where the fall occurred. Investigators could not address the condition of the window or what safety measures may have been in place. The Rambler Athens management said it is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Fox News Digital reached out for additional details about the window and any safety measures, but the complex has not yet provided a response.

A representative for the University of Georgia did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Community reaction

Local residents expressed concern for Sargent’s well‑being and called for a review of safety features in high‑rise apartments. The incident underscores the importance of proper window screens and balcony safety in multi‑unit housing, especially for students living off‑campus.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fall, focusing on whether additional safety improvements are needed to protect residents in similar situations.
