UEFA Moves to End Boycott of FIFA Tournaments, Giving Infantino Breathing Room

European soccer’s governing body, UEFA, is preparing to end its boycott of FIFA tournaments, according to the Associated Press. The decision follows intense negotiations between the two organizations and a public dispute that began when a proposed plan to sell a portion of World Cup commercial and operational rights – known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) – was leaked.

Background of the feud

UEFA members voted in July to boycott future FIFA competitions, criticizing the FFE proposal and its architect, FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Even after FIFA scrapped the plan and issued an apology for “mistakes,” UEFA reaffirmed its stance earlier this month.

Shift toward reconciliation

Sources familiar with the ongoing talks say UEFA has received assurances that the controversial project will not be revived. A UEFA representative told the AP that a meeting scheduled for Thursday will likely formalize the end of the boycott. If approved, the six European nations slated to compete – including host Poland in the Women’s Under‑20 World Cup – can remain in the tournament without any withdrawals.

Implications for FIFA leadership

The move is expected to provide President Infantino with much‑needed relief as he faces mounting challenges to his tenure. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin recently suggested on The Rest is Politics podcast that Infantino should either resign or prepare for a contested election next year. Candidates must declare their intent by the November 18 deadline, turning the upcoming vote into a numbers game among the 211 national associations.

What’s next for world soccer

While the boycott’s end removes an immediate obstacle for upcoming FIFA events, the broader power struggle between UEFA and FIFA remains unresolved. Analysts note that the relationship between the sport’s strongest continental confederation and its global governing body will continue to shape the future of international soccer governance.

Both UEFA and FIFA have been contacted for comment, and further updates are expected as the Thursday meeting concludes.
