U.S. Virgin Islands Earn Three Spots in 2026 Global Beach Index

The latest Beach.com Global Beach Index has placed three U.S. Virgin Islands beaches among the world’s best, giving travelers another reason to visit the Caribbean territory.

Top‑ranked beaches

Trunk Bay on St. John earned the No. 1 spot, while Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge on St. Croix ranked No. 7 and Magens Bay on St. Thomas placed at No. 17. The ranking considered 18 factors, including water quality, accessibility, traveler reviews, climate data, and recommendations from travel experts.

How the rankings were determined

Beach.com surveyed travel experts, analyzed 93,626 Google Maps reviews, examined five years of NASA satellite data and ten years of climate data. The methodology aimed to go beyond simple popularity polls, looking at objective measures such as water clarity and shoreline preservation.

Why Trunk Bay stands out

Trunk Bay’s appeal stems largely from its undeveloped setting. The beach lies within Virgin Islands National Park, which covers roughly two‑thirds of St. John, keeping the shoreline free of hotels and high‑rise buildings. Jeff Bell, managing editor of The Broke Backpacker, noted the beach’s “pristine state despite calls for modernization.”

Underwater, more than 40 % of the park consists of coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove shorelines, adding to the area’s natural beauty. Travel photographer Jiayi Wang said the beach offers “something new to enjoy everywhere you look,” highlighting the curved shoreline, green hills, palm trees and shifting shades of blue.

Visitor experience

While Trunk Bay draws crowds, visitors are reminded that it is a popular destination. Wang cautioned that travelers should not expect the beach to be empty, but emphasized that the experience remains rewarding even with other guests present.

Kristin Freeman of FlyOver Travel by Beach Happy, who visited with her family, described Trunk Bay as one of the few famous beaches that “beats its own postcard.”

Impact on tourism

Tourism to the U.S. Virgin Islands is already rising. According to the Caribbean Tourism Organization, stays increased 12.5 % in the first quarter of 2026, outpacing the 3.9 % growth across the Caribbean region.

U.S. citizens benefit from the territory’s status as a U.S. jurisdiction, allowing travel without a passport. St. John is accessed via ferry or boat from neighboring St. Thomas. Linda Browne, CEO of Exceptional Villas, said the combination of easy access and natural beauty makes the islands attractive to a wide range of travelers, from couples to multigenerational families.

Other top beaches

Sandy Point on St. Croix offers nearly two miles of undeveloped shoreline and clear Caribbean water, while Magens Bay on St. Thomas features a sweeping crescent of sand, calm water and amenities for day‑long visits.

With three beaches now featured among the world’s top 20, the U.S. Virgin Islands provide a compelling option for travelers seeking high‑quality coastal experiences.
