U.S. Records Hottest Summer in 132 Years, Surpassing 1936 Dust Bowl Benchmark

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released data on Wednesday confirming that the United States experienced its hottest summer in the 132‑year record, surpassing the infamous 1936 Dust Bowl summer and the previous record set in 2021.

Temperature records broken nationwide

August 2026 and the full June‑through‑August season both set new all‑time highs, while July was the hottest month ever recorded in the country. The new seasonal record exceeds the old benchmark by 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit, a sizable margin for a climate extreme.

Across the contiguous 48 states, average temperatures were well above normal. August’s average temperature of 75.6°F was 3.5°F higher than the 20th‑century average, and the meteorological summer average of 74.4°F was 3°F above the long‑term norm.

Regional impacts

The Southwest felt the brunt of the heat, with Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado each logging their warmest summer on record. The extreme warmth also intensified the ongoing Colorado River water crisis, underscoring the broader implications of sustained high temperatures.

Nationwide, the balance of record highs to lows was stark: 1,541 record monthly highs were set or tied, compared with just 87 record lows. In a stable climate, the ratio would be expected to be closer to even.

Underlying drivers

Scientists point to a strengthening El Niño in the tropical Pacific and the long‑term effects of human‑caused climate change as key contributors. While El Niño adds short‑term warmth, climate change drives more intense, frequent, and longer heat waves.

According to NOAA, the June‑through‑August period has warmed by roughly 0.46°F per decade since 1970, reflecting a steady upward trend in summer temperatures.

What this means for Americans

The record‑setting heat underscores the importance of preparedness at the community level. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors, especially the elderly and those with health conditions.

Local officials across the nation are monitoring power grid loads and water resources as the extreme temperatures persist. While the data highlights a concerning climate trajectory, it also offers an opportunity for communities to reinforce resilience measures and support families during heat emergencies.
