U.S. Oil Blockade of Iran Shows Signs of Weakening Tehran’s Economy

In a recent segment of the Indianapolis‑based show Tony Katz Today, host Tony Katz argued that the United States’ economic pressure on Iran is achieving its intended effect. Katz, a longtime commentator on foreign affairs, said the blockade is “working” and that Tehran’s capacity to fund its regional ambitions is diminishing each day.

Stealth oil operations keep global supply moving

Retired Army Major Mike Lyons, a military analyst who joined Katz, cited reporting from Axios and National Review that describes a covert oil‑shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. Tankers are reportedly turning off their AIS trackers, hugging the Omani coastline well away from Iranian coastal batteries, and moving roughly 80% of pre‑war volumes. According to Lyons, this “stealth” operation allows the flow of oil for the rest of the world while Iran’s own oil revenues are being squeezed.

Iran’s military options are limited

Lyons warned that the Iranian regime has “no more cards to play.” He noted the loss of functional radar, the absence of precision‑guided missiles with sufficient range, and the lack of advanced rockets capable of threatening ships that stay in deeper Omani waters. Even recent Iranian statements about striking targets in Europe, Lyons said, appear to be “desperation moves” as the regime’s ability to intimidate neighbors wanes.

Critics of the Trump‑era strategy face rebuttal

Katz dismissed critics who claim the Trump administration’s Iran policy arrived too late or showed weakness. Lyons added a stark assessment, describing the regime as “bent on destroying Israel” and “never truly part of the international community,” suggesting that any narrative that downplays the blockade’s impact is misleading.

Naval crew conditions not a crisis

The conversation shifted to reports of alleged poor conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed for more than 270 days in the Iran‑related operation. Media stories highlighted repetitive meals and spotty cell service, framing the situation as a crisis for sailors. Lyons, who commanded troops, called this the “five percent rule,” explaining that a small fraction of any unit will always voice complaints, and social media amplifies those voices.

According to Lyons, sailors are receiving “B‑rations” rather than combat‑only MREs, and the ship’s desalination system provides fresh water, negating claims of water shortages. Missing port calls, he said, are expected in an active combat zone and should not be portrayed as scandalous.

Comparisons to other conflicts

Katz concluded by urging politicians and media outlets to focus on the broader context, noting that Russian conscripts face far harsher conditions in Ukraine. He warned against manufacturing a crisis over “hot‑dog meals and a bad phone signal” when the strategic objective—pressuring Iran’s economy—remains on track.
