U.S. GDP expands 2.2% in Q2, consumer spending and business investment drive growth

The latest advance estimate from the Commerce Department shows the United States economy expanding at a 2.2% annualized pace for the April‑June quarter. This marks a significant upgrade from the department’s prior 1.5% estimate and signals that the nation’s economic engine remains robust under the Trump administration.

Consumer spending leads the way

Household outlays, which account for roughly 70% of all economic activity, rose at a healthy 3.8% annual rate in the second quarter. That is a dramatic jump from the modest 0.7% increase recorded in the first quarter, indicating that families are confident enough to spend on goods and services despite lingering global uncertainties.

Business investment fuels an AI boom

Business investment, excluding housing, surged 9% in the same period. Much of that growth is tied to the artificial‑intelligence investment boom, with companies importing computer chips and related equipment at a 12.6% annual rate to support new AI projects. While the surge in imports subtracts from the overall GDP figure, it also reflects a forward‑looking industrial base that is positioning the United States for future technological leadership.

Underlying strength and housing

When volatile government spending and trade numbers are stripped out, the core measure of economic strength rose 4.6%—a notable acceleration from the 1.8% gain recorded in the first quarter. Housing investment, long weighed down by high mortgage rates, finally turned positive, climbing 2.8% and marking the first increase since the end of 2024.

Import surge tempers headline growth

The rise in imports, driven largely by AI‑related components, shaved roughly 1.7 percentage points off the headline GDP growth rate. Nonetheless, the overall picture remains one of resilience, especially given the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tension with Iran and recent spikes in global energy prices.

What’s next?

The Commerce Department will release its first look at third‑quarter growth on October 29, providing another data point to gauge whether the current momentum can be sustained. For now, the upgraded Q2 figure offers a reassuring sign that the nation’s economy is holding steady, bolstered by consumer confidence and strategic business investment.
