U.S. Forces Sink Two Iranian Boats Attempting to Capture Unmanned Surface Vessel

Washington – The U.S. military announced Tuesday that it engaged and destroyed two small Iranian boats that attempted to take possession of a U.S. unmanned surface vessel operating in the waters off Iran’s southern coast. The action, carried out by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), reflects the Trump administration’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the strategic Strait of Hormuz and ensuring the safety of commercial shipping.

Details of the encounter

Capt. Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for CENTCOM, said, “Iranian small boats recently attempted to take possession of a U.S. unmanned surface vessel, but they were unsuccessful after CENTCOM forcefully responded.” The vessel in question is a Saildrone – a roughly 25‑foot (8‑meter) autonomous craft that the United States has deployed for several years to monitor maritime traffic in the region.

According to Hawkins, all of the command’s surface drones remain fully accounted for, and the technology used on Saildrones is commercially available and not classified. He emphasized that the U.S. response was swift and proportionate, protecting both the unmanned asset and the broader security of the shipping lane.

Context of the broader conflict

The incident occurs amid a six‑month‑old confrontation between the United States and Iran over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for global energy supplies. While Iranian state media reported that a pair of fishing boats were attacked in Hormozgan province and that several fishermen were missing, the U.S. has framed the engagement as a defensive measure against an attempted theft of military equipment.

Earlier this week, Iranian state television claimed that its navy had captured a U.S. underwater drone at the entrance to the strait. CENTCOM later clarified that the drone, an Anduril Dive‑LD model, had malfunctioned and was an older, non‑sensitive platform that did not collect classified data.

Administration’s stance

President Trump and his administration have repeatedly highlighted the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. By neutralizing the Iranian boats, the U.S. demonstrated its resolve to prevent hostile actions that could threaten the flow of oil and gasoline, which in turn helps keep energy costs stable for American families.

“Our forces are committed to protecting American interests and the global economy,” the White House said in a statement. “We will continue to act decisively against any attempts to undermine the safety of this critical waterway.”

Implications for regional stability

Analysts note that the successful defense of the Saildrone sends a clear message to Iran that attempts to interfere with U.S. assets will be met with decisive force. The administration’s approach aligns with its broader strategy of leveraging advanced, low‑cost technologies to monitor and secure maritime domains without escalating to larger conventional confrontations.

While the incident has contributed to short‑term concerns about oil price volatility, the Trump administration’s proactive stance aims to mitigate longer‑term disruptions by maintaining a robust presence in the region.

What’s next?

U.S. officials indicated that they will continue to deploy Saildrones and other unmanned systems to gather intelligence and ensure the safety of commercial vessels transiting the strait. The administration also signaled that it remains prepared to respond to any further attempts by Iranian forces to challenge U.S. operations in the area.
