U.S.-China Tensions Over Taiwan Could Risk Nuclear Escalation, Study Warns

A recent study by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) warns of the potential for nuclear escalation in the event of a conflict between the United States and China over Taiwan. The report, released ahead of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, highlights the strategic significance of Taiwan and the risks associated with military operations targeting command and communications hubs.

Strategic Concerns in the Asia-Pacific

The IISS assessment suggests that the world is on the brink of a new nuclear arms race, with the Asia-Pacific region at its center. Countries in the region, along with those with strategic interests, are expanding their nuclear arsenals and pursuing long-range conventional-strike capabilities, challenging strategic stability.

The Shangri-La Dialogue, an informal conference running from May 29 to 31, will bring together ministers, generals, intelligence chiefs, diplomats, analysts, and weapons manufacturers to discuss these pressing issues. The conference follows a recent summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Donald Trump, which raised concerns in Taiwan about the U.S. commitment to defend the democratically ruled island.

Military Tensions and Nuclear Risks

China has increased its military presence around Taiwan, keeping the island on high alert. The IISS report notes that both U.S. and Chinese forces could engage in extensive military operations across various domains in a Taiwan conflict scenario. The lack of clear guard rails or rules of engagement could lead to targeting of critical command and control nodes, increasing the risk of nuclear escalation.

While the U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals remain larger than China’s, the Pentagon reports that China is rapidly expanding its nuclear capabilities, aiming to field 1,000 warheads by 2030. This expansion is faster than any other nuclear power, according to U.S. officials and arms control analysts.

As the world watches these developments, the potential for a major conflict involving nuclear powers continues to loom large, underscoring the need for diplomatic efforts and strategic stability in the region.
