Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua heavyweight bout slated for Dec. 11 in Cardiff

Boxing fans across the United Kingdom and the United States have a new date to mark on their calendars. The heavyweight showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua is now targeting Dec. 11, with the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, emerging as the likely venue.

Negotiations and backers

The fight’s logistics are still being ironed out. Representatives for both fighters are awaiting final confirmation from Netflix, which will hold broadcast rights and provide the bulk of the $200 million financial backing, as well as from Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Al‑Sheikh and the Public Investment Fund‑owned entertainment firm Sela.

Netflix’s involvement reflects its strategy to deliver premium sports content to a prime‑time U.S. audience. To accommodate this, TKO Group Holdings has been enlisted to explore a U.S. venue option, with Las Vegas and New York’s Madison Square Garden previously discussed. However, the fighters’ contracts each contain a clause requiring the bout to take place in the United Kingdom, a provision that Joshua’s camp has insisted on keeping.

Why Cardiff?

While Joshua has expressed a preference for Wembley Stadium in London, the Principality Stadium offers several practical advantages. Its 73,931‑seat capacity and fully enclosed roof eliminate weather‑related delays, and the venue’s flexible scheduling can more easily accommodate an early‑morning start time. Unlike Wembley, which typically observes an 11 p.m. local curfew, the Cardiff arena has a history of hosting events that begin in the early morning hours.

The proposed compromise is a 1 a.m. UK start (8 p.m. ET), a time slot that would satisfy both the UK‑based contract clause and Netflix’s desire for a U.S. prime‑time broadcast.

Contractual background

Fury and Joshua signed contracts in April to face each other this year, but pinpointing a date and location has proven difficult. Each fighter’s agreement contains distinct location provisions, leading to a protracted negotiation process. Joshua, 36, has consistently insisted that the fight be held on British soil, while Fury, 38, has signaled willingness to meet that requirement.

Both camps have indicated a readiness to compromise on the exact venue, provided the UK clause remains intact. The latest reports suggest that a decision could be announced within the week once all parties reach consensus.

What this means for fans

If the Dec. 11 date is confirmed, the bout will become one of the most lucrative events in boxing history, rivaling the $200 million figure cited by The Athletic. Fans can expect a high‑definition broadcast on Netflix, with the potential for additional pay‑per‑view options through partner platforms.

Local businesses in Cardiff stand to benefit from an influx of visitors, while the broader boxing community anticipates a historic clash that could redefine the heavyweight landscape for years to come.
