Model and television personality Tyra Banks has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, claiming that the producers of the docuseries ‘Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model’ manipulated interview footage to support a false narrative about her role on the show. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, says that the three-part docuseries defamed Banks by implication and portrayed her in a false light.
Background of the Lawsuit
The lawsuit also claims breach of contract and false endorsement. The production company EverWonder Studio is also named as a defendant. According to the complaint, Banks did not get access to the docuseries until the day before it premiered on Netflix, leaving her without the opportunity to correct inaccuracies, request edits or withdraw her participation.
Representatives for Netflix, as well as for the show’s directors, Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan, and EverWonder Studio did not respond to requests for comment. A representative for Banks declined to comment. The lawsuit says that the producers used only about 16 minutes of the 3 1/2-hour interview that Banks had given to them, and that they used what could be stripped of context and reassembled to support a false and defamatory narrative unrelated to what she actually expressed.
The lawsuit also contends that the producers manipulated the interview footage to make it appear that Banks knew she was being asked about a sexual assault and was intentionally trying to evade the topic. Banks is seeking a jury trial that will determine damages.
