TYLER, Texas — Hundreds of local teens turned the lanes at Tyler’s bowling alley into a colorful showcase of creativity and community spirit during the annual “Monster Bowl.” The event, organized by the Junior Symphony League of Tyler, combined bowling, pizza, candy and a shared love of music to raise money for East Texas Youth Music.
Costumes, Competition and a Cause
Participants arrived dressed as beloved characters, from Scooby‑Doo to classic movie monsters, adding a festive flair to the competition. Sam Vogler, a league member who plays violin in the East Texas Youth Orchestra, bowled as Scooby‑Doo and explained why the fundraiser matters: “It helps raise money so that young musicians like me can get the experience I need for a good future.”
How the Money Helps
The Junior Symphony League requires each member to collect $50 in pledges. According to the league, 60% of the funds go directly to the East Texas Youth Orchestra, supporting instrument purchases, sheet music, travel expenses and performance costs. The remaining 40% funds music scholarships administered by the Women’s Symphony League, ensuring that talented students can continue their studies regardless of financial need.
Last year the league reported earnings of more than $10,000, a testament to the generosity of families, local businesses and volunteers who recognize the value of nurturing young talent.
Leadership Emphasizes Community Service
Christie Schultz, co‑vice president‑elect of the league, highlighted the broader mission: “The reason we want them to be involved is to learn to give back to their community and support those people who are the artists that bring beauty and art and music to our community.” Schultz’s remarks underscore the league’s focus on character development alongside musical training.
Student Voices on the Impact of Music
League member Michael Watson, a cellist in the East Texas Youth Orchestra and recipient of the Alex Fleming Memorial Scholarship, shared how performance experience shapes his growth. “Watching the musicians perform is teaching me about building stage presence, having a relaxed and well‑formed playing style,” he said.
Watson also works concerts for the East Texas Symphony Orchestra, gaining insight into the professional side of music while still a student.
Continuing the Support
Donations to the East Texas Youth Orchestra remain open, with the league encouraging community members to contribute online or at future events. By supporting the Junior Symphony League, donors help ensure that the next generation of musicians can access quality instruction, performance opportunities and scholarships that might otherwise be out of reach.
Looking Ahead
The success of the Monster Bowl demonstrates how local youth can combine fun and philanthropy to strengthen the cultural fabric of Tyler. Organizers hope to expand the event in coming years, inviting more schools, families and businesses to join the cause and keep East Texas Youth Music thriving.
