Two unvaccinated Pennsylvanians die from measles, officials report

Two residents of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, have died after contracting measles, the state Department of Health announced Tuesday. Both individuals were unvaccinated, underscoring the ongoing public‑health challenge posed by low immunization rates.

State response and historical context

Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen expressed sympathy for the families, stating, “My deepest sympathies are with the loved ones who are facing this unimaginable loss.” She added that the measles‑mumps‑rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and provides the best protection available against the virus.

This is the first measles‑related mortality reported in the United States in 2026 and the first such deaths in Pennsylvania since 1991, a span of 35 years. The state has confirmed 393 measles cases across 28 counties so far this year.

National resurgence

Measles cases have surged nationwide, with more than 2,700 reported infections in 2026—exceeding any year since 1991. The disease was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, yet recent years have seen a dramatic rebound, with the current year’s case count surpassing the total recorded in the previous 25 years combined.

Health experts attribute the rise to pockets of unvaccinated individuals and international travel that reintroduces the virus. Two doses of the combined MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles infection.

Public‑health implications

Officials emphasized the importance of vaccination for community protection, especially for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. The Department of Health declined to release further personal details about the deceased, citing privacy concerns.

Local health departments continue to monitor the outbreak, encourage vaccination, and provide resources for families seeking immunizations. The situation serves as a reminder of the critical role that vaccines play in safeguarding public health and preventing avoidable deaths.

What residents can do

Pennsylvania residents are urged to verify their vaccination status and that of their children. The MMR vaccine is typically administered in two doses—first at 12‑15 months of age and a booster at 4‑6 years. Those unsure of their immunization records should contact their healthcare provider or local health department for guidance.
