Two Small Quakes Felt Across Central New Mexico on Monday Night and Tuesday Dawn

Central New Mexico experienced two minor earthquakes within a span of just a few hours, prompting residents in Socorro and Valencia counties to feel brief tremors. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the first event at 9:40 p.m. on Monday, registering a magnitude of 3.1. The quake’s epicenter was located a few miles southwest of the small community of Pueblitos, south of Belen, at a shallow depth of roughly 3.1 miles.

Less than three hours later, at 12:03 a.m. on Tuesday, a second tremor struck the same general area. This time the USGS recorded a magnitude of 2.5, with the epicenter positioned about 14 miles west of Pueblitos in Valencia County. Like the earlier event, the quake’s depth was also measured at approximately 3.1 miles.

What Residents Reported

People living in the northern part of Socorro County described hearing a low rumble and feeling a gentle sway in their homes. Similar reports came from several neighborhoods in Valencia County, where a few homeowners noted a brief shaking of furniture and hanging objects. No damage to structures was reported, and there were no injuries associated with either quake.

Scientific Context

New Mexico sits on a complex network of fault lines, though it is not as seismically active as states like California. Small earthquakes of this magnitude are relatively common in the region and typically cause little to no impact beyond the sensation of movement. The USGS continues to monitor the area for any further activity and will update the public if larger events are detected.

Safety Recommendations

While these tremors were minor, officials remind residents to stay prepared for potential future earthquakes. Basic safety steps include securing heavy furniture to walls, keeping a flashlight and emergency supplies handy, and knowing safe spots in a home—such as under sturdy tables or against interior walls—where one can take cover during shaking.

Local emergency management agencies have not issued any specific alerts following the two events. Residents who experience any unusual aftershocks or notice structural concerns are encouraged to contact their county emergency services.

Looking Ahead

The USGS will continue to track seismic activity in the central New Mexico corridor. For now, the community can breathe a sigh of relief that the quakes were low‑magnitude and caused no harm. As always, staying informed through reliable sources like the USGS and local emergency management offices remains the best way to ensure safety.
