Two Philadelphia firefighters injured responding to basement fire on Wharton Street

Early Saturday morning, Philadelphia Fire Department crews rushed to a three‑story row house at the 1000 block of Wharton Street in South Philadelphia after receiving a call about flames emerging from the basement of an occupied dwelling.

Rapid response and containment

The department logged the first alarm at 5:23 a.m. and arrived on scene within minutes. Firefighters found the fire well established in the basement and immediately began suppression efforts. By 5:49 a.m., crews had brought the blaze under control, preventing further spread to the upper floors.

Injuries and medical evaluation

During the operation, two firefighters sustained minor injuries. Both were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and were listed in stable condition. No civilian injuries were reported, and the three residents of the home were safely displaced and taken to temporary shelter.

Investigation underway

The Philadelphia Fire Marshal’s Office has opened an investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire. At this time, officials have not released additional details.

Community impact

While the incident caused temporary disruption for the affected family, the swift actions of the fire department averted a larger disaster. Neighbors expressed gratitude for the professionalism of the first‑responders and offered assistance to the displaced residents.

Safety reminder

City officials continue to urge homeowners to maintain functional smoke detectors, keep fire extinguishers accessible, and practice fire‑escape plans. Early detection and rapid reporting remain critical in protecting lives and property.
