Lenoir County Sheriff Jackie Rogers confirmed that two of her deputies were shot on Friday while responding to a report of gunfire on Jonestown Road in the small community of Pink Hill. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies arrived at the scene after a call was logged that someone was firing shots in the area.
Sequence of events
When the deputies entered the vicinity, a man emerged from a nearby home and opened fire on them. The deputies returned fire, after which the man retreated back into the residence. Rogers said the suspect later fired at the deputies a second time, prompting the officers to again return fire.
Both deputies were subsequently transported to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. One of the officers required surgery, while the other’s injuries were treated on an outpatient basis. Medical personnel indicated that the injuries are not believed to be life‑threatening.
Suspect status and investigation
The man who fired at the deputies was later located in a bedroom of the same home. His condition has not been released, and officials have not provided further details about his identity or motive. When asked whether the suspect had taken his own life, Sheriff Rogers declined to comment, noting the need to inform the family and respect privacy.
The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, has asked residents to avoid the immediate area while the investigation continues. No additional threat to the public has been reported.
Community context
Rogers described the location as “a very quiet portion of Lenoir County,” emphasizing that the incident is atypical for the area. She added that the department has not received other calls for service in that part of the county on the day of the shooting.
Authorities continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and process the scene. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
