Two killed in high‑speed crash on Loop 1604 near Culebra Road

San Antonio police are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred just before 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the 6100 block of Northwest Loop 1604, near Culebra Road. Officers responded to reports of a high‑speed crash and found a vehicle that had left the roadway, struck a median, and then careened down an embankment.

Crash details

According to a preliminary report from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle collided with another car. The impact forced the driver’s vehicle off the road, where it hit a median before plunging down an embankment. The vehicle rolled over several times before finally coming to rest.

First responders arrived on the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m. and discovered two occupants inside the vehicle. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, and the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.

Investigation ongoing

Investigators are treating the crash as a homicide investigation pending the results of the forensic analysis. SAPD has not released any information about possible contributing factors such as alcohol, drugs, or vehicle condition. The department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has additional information to contact the police.

Authorities also remind drivers that Loop 1604 is a major thoroughfare with high traffic volumes, especially during early‑morning hours. Speeding and reckless driving increase the risk of severe accidents, endangering not only the driver but also other road users and nearby residents.

Community response

The tragedy has sparked concern among local families and faith‑based groups who emphasize the importance of safe driving practices. Community leaders are calling for increased public awareness campaigns that reinforce the value of responsible driving, especially on busy highways that serve as lifelines for commuters and emergency services.

San Antonio officials have not indicated any immediate changes to traffic enforcement policies, but the incident underscores the ongoing need for vigilant law‑enforcement presence on the city’s major roadways.

Next steps

The SAPD will continue its investigation, reviewing dash‑cam footage, witness statements, and any physical evidence recovered from the crash site. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the victims’ identities and cause‑of‑death findings once the autopsy is complete.

Residents who wish to stay informed about the investigation can follow updates on the SAPD’s official website or local news outlets.
