Two Kentucky men die in separate drownings at Lake Cumberland over weekend

Two Kentucky residents lost their lives in separate drowning incidents at Lake Cumberland over the weekend, officials confirmed. The tragedies occurred in different parts of the lake on Saturday, prompting rescue crews from Pulaski and Russell counties to conduct searches.

Incident at Pitman Creek

Ricky Turner, 66, of London, was on a boat in the Pitman Creek area of Lake Cumberland on Saturday when he jumped into the water and failed to resurface. The Somerset‑Pulaski County Rescue Squad launched a search that evening, but crews called off the operation later that night after failing to locate him.

Incident at Wolf Creek

In a separate incident, Andy Schmidt, 42, of Lexington, was camping near the Wolf Creek area of the lake. He went swimming Saturday night and did not return to shore. The Russell County Coroner’s office reported that Schmidt’s body was recovered on Sunday morning.

Investigations continue

Both incidents remain under investigation by local authorities. No foul play has been suggested, and officials have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the drownings.

Safety reminders

Lake Cumberland is a popular recreation destination for boating, fishing, and camping. State and local officials routinely advise visitors to wear life jackets, avoid swimming alone, and be aware of changing water conditions, especially after dark. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources also recommends checking weather forecasts and water temperature before entering the lake.

Community response

Friends and family of the two men have expressed grief on social media, urging others to take water safety seriously. Local churches and community groups are organizing prayer vigils and offering support to the families during this difficult time.

The Lake Cumberland region spans Pulaski, Russell, and several neighboring counties, drawing visitors from across the state. While the lake provides valuable economic benefits through tourism and recreation, these incidents underscore the importance of vigilance and preparedness when enjoying its waters.
