Two Drivers Killed in Wrong‑Way Collision on U.S. Highway 69 Near Eufaula Lake

Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed that a fatal wrong‑way crash occurred Sunday evening on U.S. Highway 69 near Eufaula Lake, resulting in the deaths of two drivers. The incident happened at approximately 7 p.m. when a vehicle traveling southbound entered the northbound lanes and struck a northbound vehicle head‑on.

Victims identified

The driver of the southbound, wrong‑way vehicle was identified as 75‑year‑old Sandra Burton of Eufaula. The driver of the northbound vehicle was identified as 62‑year‑old Albert Oosterloo of Broken Arrow. Both men and women were alone in their cars and were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, according to the patrol report.

Investigation underway

OHP officers responded to the scene shortly after the collision was reported. Investigators are collecting evidence, including dash‑cam footage and witness statements, to determine why the southbound vehicle entered the opposite lane. Preliminary findings have not yet been released, but authorities stress that wrong‑way driving remains a dangerous and preventable behavior.

Safety reminder for Oklahoma drivers

The tragedy underscores the importance of staying alert and obeying posted traffic signs, especially on rural highways that can be deceptively narrow. OHP routinely warns motorists to watch for signage indicating lane direction and to avoid distractions such as mobile devices while driving.

Community response

Local officials in McIntosh County expressed condolences to the families of the victims. County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson John Miller said, “Our thoughts are with the families of Ms. Burton and Mr. Oosterloo. We urge all drivers to respect traffic laws and keep our roads safe for everyone.”

What to do if you encounter a wrong‑way driver

OHP recommends that drivers who see a vehicle traveling the wrong way should:

  • Slow down and maintain a safe distance.
  • Signal and safely pull over to the shoulder if possible.
  • Call 911 immediately, providing the vehicle’s description, location, and direction of travel.

By reporting such incidents quickly, motorists can help prevent further collisions and assist law‑enforcement in removing the errant vehicle from the roadway.

Looking ahead

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol will continue its investigation into the cause of the wrong‑way movement. In the meantime, the department plans to increase patrols along high‑risk corridors, including U.S. Highway 69, to deter similar incidents.
