Two men from Anna have been arrested in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old near Dodd Park. Police said Jermey Butler and Valquan Harris were taken into custody on capital murder warrants linked to the April 16 death of Ty’Ron Kuria.
Wylie police said both men were arrested about 12:06 p.m. on Monday, April 20, in Anna and were transported to the Wylie city jail. Chief Anthony Henderson praised the work that led to the arrests.
“I am thankful for the officers and detectives in the Wylie Police Department who worked every day to determine what took place near Dodd Park,” Henderson said in a statement. “Their work resulted in the arrest of those responsible for the death of Ty’Ron. We remain committed to continuing our investigation until this case is ready to be sent to the Collin County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.”
Sgt. Donald English said officers first responded shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, to reports of shots fired on the northeast corner of Country Club Road and Park Boulevard.
“Multiple witnesses reported hearing several shots being fired and several males running in various directions,” English said.
Officers found Kuria with gunshot wounds. Wylie Fire-Rescue personnel gave life-saving care at the scene and then took him to a regional hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
Kuria was a junior at Wylie ISD Achieve Academy. Principal Janet Wyatt wrote to students and families about the loss.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Ty’Ron’s family, friends and all who knew and loved him,” Wyatt said. “Our hearts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time.” She also said counseling services were made available and extra counselors were on campus to support students.
The police asked the public not to spread unverified information about the case. “The spreading of rumors does nothing to bring justice for the family,” the department said in a statement. They also said no additional information would be released while the investigation continues.
Wylie police thanked the Anna Police Department, Allen Police Department SWAT team, Richardson Police Department SWAT team and the U.S. Marshals Service for assisting with the arrests. Investigators say they will continue working on the case until evidence is ready to be presented to the Collin County District Attorney’s Office.
