Tuscaloosa Tennis Center Honored as 2026 USTA Outstanding Facility

The Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority (PARA) celebrated a major achievement today: the USTA named the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center a 2026 Outstanding Facility. The award places the Tuscaloosa venue among 40 other top sites nationwide recognized for excellence in court design, maintenance, and community programming.

National recognition at the US Open

The USTA presented the award during a special reception at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, part of the US Open festivities. Officials highlighted the center’s overall layout, high‑quality court surfaces and lighting, ease of maintenance, and thoughtful amenities for players, spectators, and media.

Expanded capacity for local tennis

Recent expansion work increased the complex to 30 courts, dramatically boosting Tuscaloosa’s ability to host recreational play, instructional programs, leagues, and regional tournaments. The larger footprint supports grassroots tennis initiatives that the USTA cited as a key factor in the award.

Local leaders praised

Brian Davis, CEO of PARA, thanked Mayor Walt Maddox and Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner for their leadership and support. Davis also highlighted the dedication of the PARA Board of Directors, noting that their hard work helped the center meet the rigorous criteria used by the USTA.

What the award means for the community

Being named an Outstanding Facility signals that Tuscaloosa’s tennis program meets national standards for quality and accessibility. Residents can expect continued investment in court upkeep, enhanced spectator areas, and expanded youth instruction. The recognition also positions the city to attract larger tournaments, bringing visitors and economic activity to the area.

Criteria for the award

The USTA evaluates facilities on several factors, including:

  • Overall layout and adaptation to the site
  • Excellence of court surface and lighting
  • Ease of maintenance
  • Accommodations for players, spectators, and press/officials
  • Aesthetics and graphics, including signage and landscaping
  • Amenities such as casual seating, food services, and social areas
  • Participation in grassroots tennis programs

The Tuscaloosa Tennis Center scored highly across all categories, reflecting the authority’s commitment to providing a top‑tier recreational resource for families and athletes alike.

Looking ahead

PARA plans to leverage the award to further promote tennis participation throughout the county. Upcoming initiatives include expanded junior leagues, senior play times, and partnerships with local schools to integrate tennis into physical‑education curricula. The authority also hopes the national spotlight will encourage additional private and public investment in Tuscaloosa’s park and recreation infrastructure.
