Tuscaloosa County has reached a significant milestone, with over $1 billion in visitor spending in 2025. This achievement is attributed to the growth of tourism, sports events, and the local hospitality industry.
Tourism’s Impact on the Local Economy
The $1 billion in visitor spending has had a substantial impact on the local economy, accounting for 20% of all spending in Tuscaloosa County. The county welcomed over 750,000 overnight visitors and recorded 1.1 million paid accommodation room nights.
According to Kelsey Rush, President and CEO of Visit Tuscaloosa, "Every visitor who stays in our hotels, dines in our restaurants, attends events, shops locally, or experiences our attractions directly supports jobs, local businesses, and the quality of life our residents enjoy every day."
Key Drivers of Visitor Spending
The main drivers of visitor spending in Tuscaloosa include food and beverage (52%), gas and service stations (24%), retail (16%), and accommodations (9%). Sports tourism has also played a vital role, with Visit Tuscaloosa directly recruiting, supporting, or assisting with over 160 events in 2025.
These events generated $24 million in event-related economic impact and over $1.6 million in tax revenue for the community. Major sports and tourism wins for Visit Tuscaloosa include hosting the Athletes Unlimited Softball League games and championship events, securing the HBCU Athletic Conference Baseball and Softball Championships, and landing the NJCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships.
