Tuscaloosa’s beloved Oktoberfest is back at Government Plaza on Saturday, Oct. 3, offering a full day of German‑themed food, music, and family‑friendly fun. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to the public, while the Oktoberfest 5K begins at 8 a.m. and benefits the American Cancer Society.
Free festivities for the whole community
The schedule leans heavily into crowd‑pleasers. The popular Dachshund Dash, presented by the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter and the Downtown Merchants Association, will see four‑legged competitors sprint for treats. A Dog Costume Contest, sponsored by Unleashed Pet Boutique, follows, and a Stein Hoisting Contest—backed by Crimson Tap House—adds a playful nod to German tradition. FastSigns will host a Hammerschlagen competition, letting participants test their strength with a traditional wooden hammer game.
Live music and local vendors
Two local bands, Oompah‑Calypse and The Stone Feathers, will perform on the SmartBank Stage throughout the day, providing a lively soundtrack for visitors. Because Alabama’s football team plays at Mississippi State that afternoon, the festival will broadcast the game on a large LED screen provided by SmartBank and made possible by EatMyBeats, ensuring fans don’t miss a play.
Family zone and beer tradition
The Kids Zone, presented by Tuscaloosa Academy, offers games and activities for younger guests. Beer will be sold in a special commemorative Oktoberfest stein, available on‑site for $10; the beverage itself is priced separately. Runners in the 5K receive a registration package that includes the race entry, a T‑shirt, a commemorative stein and one complimentary beer for participants 21 and older.
