In a “Mayor’s Minute” posted today, Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox highlighted the rapid progress of the University Boulevard East Improvement Project, now 75 % complete. The $21 million investment, carried out in partnership with the Tuscaloosa Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, is reshaping a key corridor in the city’s Alberta neighborhood.
Key upgrades moving forward
The project includes extensive utility work between Arcadia Drive and Redmont Drive, new lighting, security features, pedestrian pathways and landscaping. Streetscaping on the north side of the corridor is already taking shape, giving residents a first look at the enhanced design.
Approximately three‑quarters of the new sidewalk has been installed on the south side of the construction zone. City Council President Kip Tyner, who spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, called the sidewalk improvements a “big deal” and recalled walking in dangerous ditches as a child. “This is something I’ve only dreamed about and now it’s reality,” Tyner said.
Traffic impact and timeline
Mayor Maddox noted that the completion of major underground utility work will reduce the need for frequent traffic pattern changes. While temporary road and intersection closures will still occur at times, drivers can expect smoother travel as the project nears its finish.
The city expects the entire improvement effort to be completed in the first quarter of next year. Maddox expressed confidence that the schedule and budget will be met, emphasizing the project’s role in revitalizing Alberta after the devastating EF‑4 tornado of April 27, 2011.
