Tuscaloosa Environmental Services Announces Inaugural Recycled Art Contest

The City of Tuscaloosa’s Environmental Services Department has launched its inaugural Recycled Art Contest, a new initiative aimed at raising environmental awareness and encouraging creative reuse of everyday waste. The contest invites artists of all ages to turn recyclable materials—such as cardboard, plastics, paper, metal, glass, and other clean discarded items—into original artwork.

How to Enter

Entries are divided into two age categories: participants 17 and younger, and participants 18 and older. Artists must ensure that the primary materials used in each piece are recycled, reused, or repurposed. Submissions are accepted through the city’s online portal, with a deadline of October 1. Winners will be announced on October 2.

Prizes and Recognition

Each winning artist will receive two weekend passes to the Kentuck Festival of the Arts, scheduled for October 17‑18, a coupon for a free festival T‑shirt, and the opportunity to have their artwork displayed at the festival. The contest provides a platform for local creators to showcase how discarded items can gain a second life while celebrating Tuscaloosa’s vibrant arts scene.

Materials and Support

To help participants, the Environmental Services Department is offering up to five gallons of recycled glass mulch per artist. The glass mulch can be requested via the department’s website and will be available for pickup at the department’s facility located at 3440 Reese Phifer Avenue. Artists must bring their own containers for transport.

Community Impact

By highlighting the potential of waste materials, the contest aligns with the city’s broader sustainability goals, including reducing landfill waste and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. The initiative also supports local families, offering a creative outlet for children and adults alike while reinforcing the importance of responsible consumption.

How to Get Involved

Interested participants can find contest guidelines and submission information by clicking the link provided in the city’s press release. The Environmental Services Department encourages schools, community groups, and individual artists to take part and help spread the message that everyday items can be transformed into works of art.

For additional details, including how to request recycled glass mulch, visit the City of Tuscaloosa’s Environmental Services website or contact the department directly at the address listed above.
