Tuscaloosa County’s new TuscALERT system experienced a glitch in the early morning hours, resulting in unintended phone calls to residents. The issue occurred due to the implementation of new RAVE technology provided by the governor’s office and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency.
System Adjustment
EMA Director Nick Lolley explained that the agency’s priority was to ensure residents received critical notifications, and as a result, some residents received unintended calls. Technicians have identified the issue and made adjustments to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Lolley stated that future phone calls by the upgraded system will alert for Tornado Watches and Tornado Warnings only, while all other emergency notifications will be sent through text messages and email. The new system has about 18,000 subscribers in Tuscaloosa who receive notices of pending significant and severe weather events.
