What to do with old devices | What the Tech?

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – With Earth Day coming up, it turns out old phones and tablets can still help at home instead of ending up in the trash and in a landfill.

“If you’ve got an old smartphone, even one that’s seven or eight years old and it still turns on, it can be incredibly useful,” technology reporter Jamey Tucker said.

An old phone can work as a music player for the gym, a smart alarm clock if it connects to Wi Fi, or a backup TV remote through Roku or Fire TV apps.

“If you’ve got young kids, here’s another idea. Even old phones without a cell plan can still call 911,” Tucker said.

Damaged devices may still be useful if they connect to Wi Fi, pointing to an old iPad on his desk that still streams shows and works with voice tools.
