Veterinarians use a detailed checklist—much like a human medical history—to record a toad’s age, origin, diet, housing and any symptoms. Physical exams cover everything from nose to hind‑quarters, and specialists check heart rate with a Doppler monitor, the same device used to listen to a fetus’s heartbeat. “We always wear gloves,” says zoological veterinarian Krista Keller of UC Davis, noting that gloves protect both the animal and the handler.

Protecting toads and the public
Beyond scientific curiosity, the work has practical implications. Some people attempt to lick or smoke toad toxin for hallucinogenic effects, a practice the National Park Service warned against in 2022. “Licking toads is dangerous for humans, pets, and the toads themselves,” warns Robert Villa, community outreach assistant at the Desert Laboratory.
