A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer at Fayetteville Regional Airport found an inactive explosive component in a passenger’s carry-on bag. The officer, Brady Jackson, was conducting a routine X-ray screening when he spotted a suspicious key chain.
The key chain was later identified as an inert initiator, a device that can trigger an explosive or propellant. According to the TSA, the passenger had been told by a friend that the initiator was inactive and could be brought through the airport, but this is not the case.
A TSA explosives specialist and local law enforcement responded to the incident, and the passenger voluntarily abandoned the item. The TSA praised the officer’s vigilance and effective teamwork in detecting the item.
Security Measures
The TSA prohibits a total of 494 items from being carried on planes, and this incident highlights the importance of strict security measures. The agency’s officers are trained to detect and respond to potential threats, and this incident demonstrates their effectiveness.
