The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C. has been at the center of controversy after its renovation, led by President Donald Trump, has faced numerous issues. The pool’s new liner, which was painted a color Trump referred to as ‘American flag blue,’ has noticeably faded since its installation.
Renovation Problems
The problems with the renovation began when the pool was repainted and refilled with water in early June. Shortly after, an algae bloom formed and pieces of the new coating started peeling off the bottom. Trump has blamed vandals for the peeling paint, but critics argue it is due to shoddy repair work.
Ohio-based Green Water Solutions was given a $1.7 million contract to install a water-purification system in the Reflecting Pool, while Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings was awarded $14.7 million to repaint and waterproof the pool’s concrete floor. The total cost of the renovation has ballooned to over $16 million, far exceeding Trump’s initial estimate of $1.5 million.
Investigation and Charges
Court documents show that the National Park Service reported a June 9 incident in which a sharp knife or razor was said to have cut the pool’s new liner. Former Olympic canoe racer David Hearn has been charged with deliberately damaging the Reflecting Pool and has pleaded not guilty. His attorneys and other Trump administration critics have argued that the case is an abuse of prosecutorial power and that Hearn is being scapegoated for the poor job done on the renovation.
