Trump nominates Dr. Heidi Overton as FDA commissioner amid vaccine policy push

President Donald Trump used a social‑media post on Wednesday to name Dr. Heidi Overton as his nominee for commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. The announcement came as the administration continues to promote a narrower set of childhood vaccine recommendations.

Overton’s background and recent work

Dr. Overton is a physician who serves as a domestic‑policy adviser in the White House, regularly briefing the president on health‑related matters. She previously held the positions of vice chair and chief policy officer at the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank.

In her White House role, Overton helped craft and promote an executive order that would reduce the number of universally recommended childhood vaccinations from 18 to 11. At a recent Oval Office event, she urged “blue states” to adopt the administration’s “gold standard” vaccine schedule, arguing that parents should not be forced to meet requirements for shots the administration deems unnecessary.

Political context

The nomination arrives at a time when the FDA is confronting several high‑profile health issues. A multistate cyclospora outbreak has raised concerns about food‑safety oversight, and the agency is conducting a safety review of the abortion medication mifepristone. Republicans in Congress have also pressed to reverse a Biden‑era rule that allows mifepristone to be mailed and dispensed via telehealth.

Overton would replace Dr. Marty Makary, who resigned in May after disagreements with the White House over vaping policy and access to abortion pills. Trump praised Overton as a “rockstar” in his administration and emphasized the need for her leadership to keep the United States at the forefront of scientific discovery and cures.

Selection process

According to a senior administration official, Overton was the president’s third choice for the role, and the administration was still interviewing candidates as of Tuesday. Former Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R‑Ohio, and acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas both declined the position, citing personal considerations.

Policy positions

Overton has publicly celebrated the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, describing it as an opportunity for Americans to reevaluate the value of each unborn child and choose life through democratic means. In a 2024 op‑ed, she criticized then‑Vice President Kamala Harris for not condemning late‑term abortions and accused Democrats of avoiding a clear definition of womanhood.

Her stance on vaccine policy aligns with the administration’s broader effort to give states more flexibility in setting school‑entry immunization requirements. Overton’s comments suggest that, where states are willing, they should adopt the administration’s revised vaccine schedule into state law.

Qualifications

Overton’s professional credentials include board certification in public health and general preventive medicine, a general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and a medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

If confirmed by the Senate, Dr. Overton would lead the FDA during a period of heightened scrutiny over food safety, reproductive‑health medication regulation, and the nation’s vaccine strategy.
