President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met at the White House to discuss ways for Ukraine to produce its own powerful weapons and other ideas that could help in its ongoing war against Russia.
Defense Production and Sanctions
The meeting followed a consequential meeting at the NATO summit earlier this month in Ankara, Turkey, where Trump announced that the U.S. will give Ukraine a license to make Patriot defense systems. Zelenskyy also met with officials from Lockheed Martin to discuss further cooperation in defense production and technology exchange.
Trump and Zelenskyy discussed licenses for Patriot interceptor production and several other ideas that could help Ukraine in its war against Russia. They also spoke about diplomacy and the importance of reinvigorating the diplomatic process.
Sanctions Bill
Zelenskyy argued that Ukraine needs Patriot interceptors and a sweeping sanctions bill to impact morale and increase pressure on Russia. The Senate took the first steps toward passage of legislation to penalize countries that continue to buy Russian oil, gas, and other exports.
