Trump Family Testimony Sought

The BBC has asked a US court for assistance in obtaining documents and testimony from members of the Trump family in connection with a $10 billion defamation lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump.

Background of the Lawsuit

The lawsuit, filed in December, accuses the BBC of defamation and deceptive trade practices. The allegations center on a 2024 documentary that edited a speech Trump gave on January 6, 2021, before protesters attacked the US Capitol. The lawsuit claims the editing was intended to misrepresent Trump’s words and influence the 2024 presidential election.

The BBC has apologized for the misleading edit but denies defaming Trump. The broadcaster is now seeking testimony from Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr., who are believed to have personal knowledge and records relevant to the case.

Lawyers for the BBC argue that these family members were present when Trump was revising his speech and may have information about his intentions. The court has given Trump’s legal team until Friday to respond to the BBC’s request.
