President Donald Trump has made a significant move in the South Carolina governor’s race by endorsing both Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson. This decision comes after Trump’s endorsed candidates lost in recent primaries in Iowa and Georgia.
Trump’s Change of Heart
Trump had initially endorsed Evette, saying she had his “Complete and Total Endorsement.” However, after Evette failed to secure the 50% needed to avoid a runoff, Trump decided to also endorse Wilson. Wilson has gained momentum in the race, with several candidates who did not make the runoff throwing their support behind him.
Evette still has the support of term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster, a close friend of Trump. Trump’s dual endorsement is seen as a way to guarantee a win in a reliably red state where he has struggled to influence the outcome.
Reaction from the Candidates
Wilson quickly changed his social media profile to note Trump’s support for his campaign. “I’ve proudly stood with President Trump from the very beginning, defended him when others would not, and fought alongside him against the radical left,” Wilson said in a news release. Evette also responded to Trump’s endorsement, saying she was proud to have come in first as Trump’s endorsed candidate and is looking forward to doing it again in the runoff.
