President Donald Trump announced that the expansion of data centers will lead to lower energy costs for Americans. The Trump administration’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge, introduced in March, has gained support from over 200 stakeholders, including 23 Republican governors and major tech companies like Amazon and Google.

How the Pledge Works

The pledge requires companies that build, own, or operate data centers to pay for the new electricity generation and grid infrastructure needed to accommodate these centers. This includes paying negotiated rates for the power and related infrastructure, as well as making their backup power generation available to help the electric grid during periods of high demand.

According to the administration, the pledge will cover 80% of all the power delivered in America to homes and businesses. The president has stated that data centers will ‘pay their own way,’ and the initiative is expected to turn data centers into engines of growth for local communities.

Some lawmakers have introduced related legislation, including a bill that would establish a federal standard for the recovery of grid upgrade costs and another that would codify the president’s pledge and require data centers to independently source water and power.
