President Donald Trump has suggested that the UFC lighting grid, known as ‘The Claw,’ could remain on the White House South Lawn longer than initially planned. This comes ahead of a major UFC fight scheduled for June 14, which coincides with Flag Day and Trump’s 80th birthday.
Comparisons to Historical Structures
In a video posted on TikTok, Trump drew a parallel between ‘The Claw’ and the Eiffel Tower, which was originally intended to be dismantled after the 1889 World’s Fair. Trump remarked, ‘Many don’t know that in Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower was supposed to be taken down immediately after the World’s Fair, and then they said, ‘You know, we sorta like it, let’s leave it up a little bit longer.’ Well, they never took it down.’
He continued, ‘And, you know, we’re building something in front of the White House that’s quite attractive to a lot of people. It’s going to have the big UFC fight on June 14, and I’m looking at it — and maybe we’ll never, ever take it down.’
Logistical Challenges
The potential permanence of ‘The Claw’ poses logistical challenges. The structure, which is taller than the White House and decorated like the American flag, has already disrupted traditional operations. Trump’s arrivals and departures on the South Lawn have been temporarily halted, as the area is being prepared for the UFC event. This has necessitated motorcades to Joint Base Andrews for Air Force One trips.
Despite these challenges, this wouldn’t be the first time Trump has made unconventional changes to the White House. His administration has previously made controversial modifications, such as demolishing the East Wing and creating ‘The Presidential Walk of Fame.’
UFC’s Role and Financial Commitment
UFC CEO Dana White was seen entering the West Wing shortly before Trump’s video was posted. The UFC is covering the estimated $60 million cost of the event and related construction. White mentioned that $700,000 will be spent to re-sod the South Lawn after the event, acknowledging the impact on the grounds.
The White House is actively promoting the UFC event, which is expected to be a high-profile occasion. An image of a muscular Uncle Sam was posted on the White House’s social media page to generate excitement.
